Newcastle United youngsters Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman are celebrating after their England U20 side reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
The pair, fresh from loan spells away from St James’ Park , have been taking part in the tournament in South Korea and were both involved as England beat Costa Rica 2-1 in Jeonju.
Woodman started in goal and was needed at the death to stop Costa Rica stealing a point after a dominant England had stormed to a 2-0 lead.
Ademola Lookman opened the scoring in the first half, firing home from inside the box just after half-hour mark. He doubled the lead on 63 minutes as he beat one defend before slotting home past the goalkeeper.
Armstrong replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 71st minute and should have made it 3-0. His effort was blocked by the legs of Costa Rica keeper
Joyeria Sergio Pineda and needed a last ditch clearance off the line to stop it going in.
Costa Rica got a goal back late on to make it an a nervy finish for England. Randall Leal saw a penalty saved by Woodman but put the rebound away.
England though had done enough and will face either Mexico or Senegal in the quarter-final on June 5.
