Ashley Young struck a late winner for Manchester United at Newcastle to ensure Louis van Gaal's side did not lose ground on what was a great night for sides at the top of the Premier League table.
With time ticking away, United were the only one of the top-four contenders in action who were not winning.
But Young popped up in the 89th minute with his first goal since January 2014 to earn United a 1-0 victory over the Magpies, who were able to celebrate the return to the pitch of Jonas Gutierrez following his battle against cancer.
Leaders Chelsea remain five points clear of Manchester City after both teams claimed victories.
Eden Hazard was Chelsea's match-winner with a 22nd-minute goal in a 1-0 victory over West Ham.
David Silva struck against bottom side Leicester in first-half injury time but it remained a nervy night at the Etihad Stadium until James Milner made it 2-0 in the 88th minute.
Arsenal remain four points behind City thanks to a 2-1 victory over QPR.
Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock in the 64th minute and Alexis Sanchez doubled Arsenal's advantage five minutes later.
Charlie Austin pulled QPR back into it with a fine strike eight minutes from time but they could not find an equaliser.
After their victory over City at the weekend, Liverpool continued their excellent form by defeating struggling Burnley 2-0 at Anfield.
Stand-in captain Jordan Henderson made it two goals in as many games with the opener in the 29th minute and Daniel Sturridge netted the second six minutes after half-time.
Tottenham stayed firmly in the hunt for a Champions League place with a 3-2 victory over Swansea.
Nacer Chadli's seventh-minute volley put Spurs ahead but the night took a worrying turn moments later when Swans striker Bafetimbi Gomis collapsed.
Three years after Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest on the same ground, there was understandably huge concern.
But Gomis, who has a history of fainting, was conscious when he was carried off the pitch and Swansea later confirmed the striker was fine.
After a lengthy delay, Ki Sung-yeung drew Swansea level but second-half goals from Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend looked to have made the game safe for Spurs.
However, Gylfi Sigurdsson's 89th-minute strike ensured a frantic finish and Swansea would have taken a point but for a stunning save from Federico Fernandez's header by Hugo Lloris.
The clash between Stoke and Everton went with the form book as Mark Hughes' Potters made it three wins in a row.
Victor Moses' fine header put Stoke ahead in the 32nd minute and Mame Biram Diouf sealed the 2-0 victory six minutes from time to heap more misery on Everton boss Roberto Martinez.
