Campbell had a fabulous season at Fratton Park, while we trundled along with Titus Bramble making cock-up after cock-up; Craig Moore playing when he felt like it; some Yank called "Gooch" walking around like the Jolly Green Giant; and a bunch of kids thrown in at the deep end.
Roeder was given the boot, and rightfully so. But I cannot help but think things would have been oh so different with Campbell teaching young Steven Taylor the ropes.
It didn't happen, of course, nothing more than a pipe dream. But now we read Sol could be set for more international caps.
After seeing one brave move pay off with David Beckham's successful return to the international stage, England coach Steve McClaren is now set to recall the old-timer.
Like Beckham, Campbell's England career ground to a halt after the 2006 World Cup.
Yet, as with his former captain, Campbell's name kept cropping up ahead of McClaren naming successive squads due to the 32-year-old's outstanding form at Fratton Park.
However, after resisting the temptation for 12 months, McClaren is on the brink of naming Campbell among his squad to face Germany on August 22.
With John Terry and Ledley King definitely out and Jonathan Woodgate extremely doubtful, McClaren is short of options.
But it could come down to either ... guess what ... Campbell or our very own Steven Taylor. The pairing Roeder hoped for last season.
