Graeme Anderson: "It's hypothetical, but if the (Barton) situation happened at Sunderland I think the manager or the chairman would have wanted to make a stand.
Would Sir Alex Give Barton Another Chance?
"It's a question of 'how desperate are you?' Newcastle are desperate to get the best out of their squad and Barton is a quality paper.
"Roy Keane prides himself on having a good dressing room... and things like that can't be great for dressing room harmony.
"I wouldn't just point the finger at Newcastle - there have been lots of clubs where there have been issues with players.
"I think Sir Alex Ferguson is the master of taking the attitude that one bad apple can spoil the barrel.
"There's a certain line that, once crossed, you are out. If Joey Barton was a Manchester United player Alex Ferguson would move him out as soon as he could. And most clubs would, to be honest."
When it comes to Newcastle United's Joey Barton, everyone has an opinion.
Some see him as a talented player, while others feel he has abused the position of being a professional footballer.
But with his latest antics off-pitch many, in particular parents, fear he is setting a bad example for their children who idolise players, and want him out of the game.
Ousmane Dabo, the French footballer he attacked, has accused the Magpies of "lacking ethics and morals" for not sacking the jailed midfielder.
So should Newcastle take him back when he is released from prison, or should the Magpies just bin him?
