Despite having the better of the exchanges and chances against Newcastle at The Valley, Charlton Athletic had to be content with a point as they drew 0-0 for the second successive game.

The Addicks have now won only two of their last ten home games and this was the first time this season that they had kept a clean sheet with their central defenders Jonathan Fortune and Chris Perry keeping a tight reign on Alan Shearer's goalscoring exploits.

After a nervous start Alan Curbishley's side took the game to the visitors and striker Jason Euell, who has not scored since September, could have had a first-half hat-trick.

He volleyed over the bar on 20 minutes and then hit the post only to see his rebound blocked. He then fired a third effort straight at Shay Given and the Magpies keeper then brilliantly tipped over Graham Stuart's header.

The Magpies could have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when Scott Parker cleared Gary Speed's shot off the line and their only other first-half effort from Laurent Robert brought a fine save from Charlton keeper Dean Kiely.

In a tight second half there were few chances at either end, Given again preventing Charlton scoring when he blocked Stuart's shot while Shola Ameobi also had an effort which was saved.

Newcastle, who were in a good run of form, will be happy to be travelling back to the north-east with a point having won only twice in their last 12 visits to The Valley, while injury-hit Charlton will feel they had enough chances to take all three points.
