Shearer strikes to sink Blues

Alan Shearer will be the jewel in the crown for Newcastle United after he belted home a screamer from the edge of the area to earn Newcastle the three points which move them level on points with Liverpool and up to fifth.

Newcastle had the worst possible start when Frank Lampard split open the home defence with a threaded pass which Joe Cole slotted underneath the legs of Shay Given.

United squandered chance after chance and the closest they came before half-time was when Chelsea goalkeeper Marco Ambrosio saved from Darren Ambrose when he lashed his long-range effort over the bar.

That was until of course, when Hugo Viana pumped a hit and hope ball to the edge of the area and Shola Ameobi swivelled around Chelsea skipper Marcel Desailly to thump it home past Ambrosio.

The half-time whistle blew and Newcastle earned respectable applause from the Toon Army fans.

The second half kicked off and it only took four minutes before captain marvel Shearer received a long pass, turned and whipped in an unbelievable effort which flew into the top corner of the net, with Ambrosio well beaten.

Chelsea were shell-shocked but they just couldn't create anything and again Newcastle squandered chances to get a third when Alan Shearer amazingly hit a four yard effort out for a throw-in.

It was also disappointing to see Jonathan Woodgate, playing the best football of his career, walking off holding his injured thigh.

Chelsea piled bodies forward, with substitutes Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Robert Huth offering them more attacking options.

In the last five minutes Newcastle became a bag of nerves and were relieved when John Terry popped up at the back stick from Geremi's cross and hit his shot against the post.

But the final whistle from Rob Styles was the sweetest thing the Geordies had heard all day. Surely now Newcastle must push on and get fourth spot - before Anfield.
