The Dutch club have given up hope of holding on to the Australia international, but appear to have lost patience with the waiting game being played by Freddy Shepherd who had hoped to land the player for far less than his reported £4million price tag.
A Feyenoord statement on Emerton’s future reads: "The chances of Brett Emerton playing for the club next season are small.
"Feyenoord are now negotiating with three English club over a transfer. A fourth, Newcastle United, hopes have slimmed. The clubs know the requirements to land Emerton.
"We expect a final decision this week."
Meanwhile reports in Italy suggest that Newcastle are the Premiership club who had a £35million bid for AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta rejected. No mention of exactly where the club would find the money from though.
