Gallas speculation grows

The France international told journalists at the Confederations Cup that he was unhappy with what he perceived as a lack of ambition from the Blues, and added: "Maybe I will still be a Chelsea player at the start of the season, but I don't think so."

A report on the situation in The Guardian mentioned Arsenal as a potential destination for Gallas, but added: "However, Newcastle would match any financial package put together by the Premiership runners-up, with Sir Bobby Robson a long-term admirer."

Pure speculation perhaps, but Chelsea supremo Ken Bates has previously claimed that Newcastle made a bid for the Frenchman last summer, and bettering his current £20,000 a week salary would prove no problem.

Of all the players linked with a move to St James’ Park so far this summer Gallas, equally at home at right back or centre half, is certainly the one who could make the biggest improvement to the side and with his value estimated at £8million would prove excellent value.
