More tabloid speculation

The Mirror kicked things off by rehashing some old rumours and packaging them as an exclusive.

They claim that Gareth Southgate will be on his way up from the Smoggies and will be joined by Spurs full back Stephen Carr.

Southgate’s agent subsequently said: "I can assure you that I have not spoken to Newcastle United, nobody has called myself or Southgate about a transfer.

"It’s a case that the clubs need to deal with it, but as I said nobody has been in contact."

It may just be me, but that could easily be interpreted as a plea for Newcastle to make a bid!

Carr’s agent obviously saw the pound signs flashing in front of his eyes when he read the rumour, as he responded: "If you're asking whether Steve would be interested in Newcastle, the answer is yes."

Ipswich striker Darren Bent has denied reports suggesting that he has already agreed to follow the well worn road from Portman Road to St James’ Park.

The youngster told the East Anglian Daily Times: "There is absolutely no truth in that at all and nor have I any intention of signing for Newcastle."

But one player who could make the move from East Anglia is highly-rated Norwich City full back Darren Kenton who has turned down the offer of a new deal at Carrow Road to look for a Premiership club.

If reports in the Portuguese press are to be believed we are trying to buy most of the Benfica side with midfielders Luis Miguel and Tiago Cardoso joining Simao on our supposed wanted list

There have also been a couple of what appear to be fantasy links, with AC Milan’s Rivaldo and Real Madrid striker Javier Portillo apparently interesting Sir Bobby.

Meanwhile the Evening Chronicle claim that Manchester United have been in touch to say that they won’t be bidding for Craig Bellamy - but then Real Madrid claim not to want David Beckham.

But on the way out of the club will be Wayne Quinn, after Sir Bobby said: "He has one year left but he’s not in the side. It depends on whether he wants to stay, but I would think he wants first team football."
